Zajkel Zaia / Regional Scribe
New South Wales/Wiradjuri Country
Zajkel Zaia is a 23 year old artist living and working in regional NSW. Zajkel grew up in Dubbo, and in 2022 completed her Bachelor of Creative Industries at Charles Sturt University, graduating with High Distinction and presented the Undergraduate Academic Medal. Zajkel has always had a love of writing, traditionally favouring poetry and short stories. It wasn’t until later years when Zajkel commenced tertiary education that she discovered her passion of writing for theatre and film. Within her degree Zajkel studied writing for stage and screen, which enabled her to write and produce several short films and theatre plays. In 2020, Zajkel collaborated with several local artists to co-write and produce the play ‘I Have a Human Brain’, which was performed in the 2020 Artstate Festival. Since graduating university, Zajkel has worked with Griffin Theatre Company and Wagga Civic Theatre in their Regional Ambassadors writing program and is currently working for Freeroam Theatre Inc. as an actor, writer and director. Zajkel has written a handful of short films and poems, and is in the process of writing a satirical theatre play about the roles of women throughout history. Zajkel is eager to continue advancing her writing skills and is extremely grateful to be participating in the 2023 Regional Scribes Program.
