Project: mulamula /soft or dhii /Tea and warmth. minyaarr/belong

Juanita McLauchlan is a Gamilaraay woman living on Wiradjuri country in Wagga Wagga. Juanita enjoys the thrill, complexity, texture, chaos and control of the printmaking medium. While her material and conceptual problem-solving processes of making are experimental, Juanita’s work is equally indebted to, and guided by her Indigenous heritage.

Juanita McLauchlan will develop an immersive installation artwork that brings together stories from Regional NSW. The work will incorporate a soundscape and 2D and 3D bush-dyed textile works. It will explore themes of belonging and promote cross-cultural exchange through the ritual of sharing a cup of tea, while invoking the historical motifs of black tea, possum cloaks and the blanket census. Each of these motifs summons a variety of invocations, taking in domesticity and comfort to the expression of colonial values and where they fit today.
