Jacky Cheng /

Jacky Cheng was born in Malaysia of Chinese heritage, and now resides in Yawuru Country, Broome, WA. Her practice is fundamentally about identity and awareness through cultural activities and memories of home, country, and relationships. Her awareness was amplified through her diasporic identity as a Chinese descendant in foreign borders as she continues to question her notion of 'home' and 'belonging' - 'here and there' and the 'in between'. Personal cultural histories of the most significant experiences were reflected, documented, and expressed using papers and fibres as the predominant mediums in her practice. Being away from her homeland allowed her to nurture her own identity and it became imperative that she keep her grandmother’s stories and teachings alive. She states “I now make to remember.”

Today, Jacky is a sessional art lecturer at North Regional TAFE; an arts worker and continues to share her skill as an educator and facilitator. Her award-winning teaching accolades was also recognised at the state and national Vocational Education Training (VET) sector bestowed by the Australia Training Awards. She was also a finalist for the Curtin University Teaching Excellence Award by Awards Australia.

Jacky is a finalist in multiple art awards including Fremantle Print Award (2023), The National Works on Paper, VIC (2022) and 67th Blake Prize, NSW (2022). She attended residencies in Finland (2017, 2018 and 2019), Spain (2018), Japan (2019), Fremantle Art Centre (2021 and 2022) and at Australian Tapestry Workshop (2023) to further her practice in working with paper and fibre. In 2022, Jacky was awarded the prestigious John Stringer Prize - a coveted WA award. She will be exhibiting in a group exhibition commissioned by SPACED, a socially engaged residency Rural Utopias in late 2024 at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Her first permanent public art piece was completed in Broome in late 2022.
