Alana Hunt holds a deep interest in cultural practices taking shape outside of city-centres across Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific. Her activities as an artist and writer are defined by a commitment to sensitively challenge ideas and histories in the public sphere and the social space between people; she circulates her work through exhibitions, publishing, podcasts, events and forms of exchange that hold a degree of intimacy even when carried through mass-media.

Alana lives on Miriwoong country in the north-west of Australia and has a long standing relationship with South Asia, and more specifically Kashmir. These places shape her engagement with the violence that results from the fragility of nations and the aspirations and failures of colonial dreams.

Since 2009, Alana has orchestrated award-winning participatory art and collaborative publishing projects that have utilized a range of media to air the political and social currents emanating from the contested region of Kashmir. Through this work she continues to engage with people from the fields of contemporary art, activism, human rights, the social sciences, and journalism.

Alana publishes and exhibits her work regularly both nationally and internationally. Most recently her work has featured in Startup States at Sarai (New Delhi), Uncertain Territory at Artbank (Sydney), the International Public Art Festival Quantum City (Karachi), and Temporary Certainty at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art (Sydney). With the support of an IGNITE grant from the Copyright Agency Alana will undertake residencies with Perth Institute of Contemporary Art and Fremantle Art Centre across 2019/20.

From 2011-15 Alana worked under the direction of senior Gija artists at Warmun Art Centre on diverse inter-generational cultural projects involving art, education, local radio broadcasts, and bi-lingual video and publication making that circulated locally and internationally. Alana is an alumni of the Australia Council’s Future Leader’s program (2017), 4A’s Curators’ Intensive (2016) and Westerly Writers Development Program (2018). She is a former sub-editor of un Magazine and currently sits on their editorial advisory committee. Alana is also a peer assessor for the Australia Council for the Arts (Visual Arts).

Alana completed her undergraduate degree in Visual Arts (media arts) with first class honours from Sydney College of the Arts at the University of Sydney and a Masters from The School of Arts and Aesthetics of Jawaharlal Nehru University (Delhi).
